Campaign Objectives

No longer the silent profession—The Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) is supporting Ontario’s 85,000 Professional Engineers to GET LOUD, become engaged, and ask more of their government.

As the voice of Ontario’s engineering community, OSPE members are engaging candidates in the next provincial election to make commitments to ensure that professional engineers are heard, and that engineering is supported, valued, and respected.

That’s why OSPE’s asking our future MPPs to take a five-point pledge to become an Engineering Ally and support Ontario’s engineering community.
GROW. ACT. CONSULT. CHAMPION. SUPPORT.
The Engineering Ally Pledge asks current and future MPPs to make key, high-level commitments to support the success of our engineering community for the benefit of all Ontarians and the communities they work, live and play in.
#1 GROW
We’re asking candidates to make a commitment to grow and maintain investments in high-growth and strategic sectors where engineers are critical to our shared success. In areas such as research and innovation, the environment, transportation and infrastructure, Ontario needs to provide funding to remain competitive and excel in the new economy.
#2 ACT
Described as the engineering skills gap, we know that many of our engineering graduates are highly educated but lack some of the soft skills necessary to kickstart their career. That’s why we’re challenging candidates to act to address the underemployment of engineering talent and get engineering graduates working and gaining experience in their field. To do this, Ontario needs to better support Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) programs and explore industry partnerships to transform our world-class engineering talent from classroom to career ready.
#3 CONSULT
At a time of profound social and technological change, it’s never been more challenging for governments to govern. On issues of economic development, job creation and disruption, innovation, climate change, artificial intelligence, smart cities, and more—our politicians must leverage engineering know-how to successfully guide our growth and realize our full potential.

That’s why we’re asking candidates to commit to consulting with OSPE’s experts, our committee and taskforce representatives who bring years of professional engineering experience to complex policy decisions. The government needs to consult with engineers to ensure that they get it right the first time, every time.
#4 CHAMPION
Beyond consultation—we need governments to empower engineers as partners.

That’s why we’re asking candidates to champion the hiring and appointment of Professional Engineers to government advisory boards and the Ontario Public Service (OPS) to provide strategic and technical direction to fuel their achievement. A more complex world means more thoughtful policy solutions are needed to support our communities.
#5 SUPPORT
No longer the silent profession—engineers are leaders.

That’s why we’re asking future MPPs to support the nomination and election of Professional Engineers as political candidates in the next provincial election. This is important because engineers are expert problem solvers and strategic thinkers—they understand how complex systems work while taking into consideration risks and opportunities. Having engineers around the caucus and cabinet tables will help Ontario to better capitalize on opportunities and reduce unnecessary costs—directly benefiting our province.
